Weekly Watch Focus: Petition for America

Friday, February 24, 2017—Psalm 35:1, 4, 8 says, “Contend, O Lord with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me! …Let them be put to shame and dishonor who seek my life! Let them be turned back and disappointed who devise evil against me! …Let the net that he hid ensnare him; let him fall into it—to his destruction.”

David was a man of peace who was continually drawn into war. While there is evil in the world, those who fear the Lord will be engaged in the battle between good and evil. There is a story, some say a legend, of a visit by an angel to General Washington at Valley Forge. Told many years after by an aged veteran, the angel showed the first American President the “birth, progress, and destiny of the United States.” As the story goes, General Washington conveyed his encounter with the angel:

…my eyes beheld a fearful scene: from each of these countries (Europe, Asia, and Africa) arose thick, black clouds that were soon joined into one. Throughout this mass there gleamed a dark red light by which I saw hordes of armed men, who, moving with the cloud, marched by land and sailed by sea to America. Our country was enveloped in this volume of cloud, and I saw these vast armies devastate the whole country and burn the villages, towns and cities that I beheld springing up. As my ears listened to the thundering of the cannon, clashing of swords, and the shouts and cries of millions in mortal combat, I heard again the mysterious voice saying, “Son of the Republic, look and learn.”
…At the same moment the angel upon whose head still shone the word Union, and who bore our national flag in one hand and a sword in the other, descended from the heavens attended by legions of white spirits. These immediately joined the inhabitants of America, who I perceived were well nigh overcome, but who immediately taking courage again, closed up their broken ranks and renewed the battle. … I found myself once more gazing upon the mysterious visitor, who, in the same voice I had heard before, said, “Son of the Republic, what you have seen is thus interpreted: three great perils will come upon the Republic. The most fearful is the third, but in this greatest conflict the whole world united shall not prevail against her. Let every child of the Republic learn to live for his God, his land and the Union.”

America is embroiled in a spiritual battle waged by men and spirits set as enemies of righteousness and peace. Let every Christian call on the Lord. As David prayed, may the Lord whose “eyes are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry” both see and hear our cry for help and deliver us out of all our troubles. May His face be “against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth” (Psalm 34:15) Take Psalm 34 and 35 as your prayer arrows. Pray for America. Pray for President Trump. Pray for Vice President Mike Pence. Pray for the Cabinet. May God who answers, hear and deliver!

“Great is the Lord, who delights in the welfare of his servant! My tongue shall tell of your righteousness and of your praise all day long” (Psalm 35:28).
