Finished
Finished!

The day Jesus was crucified was the day of the Passover celebration. On that day, every house in Israel brought their selected lamb to be sacrificed in commemoration of their great exodus from Egyptian slavery. For 1,200 years, at 3:00 p.m. the priest would blow the shofar the moment the Passover lamb was sacrificed. All Israel would listen for the sound coming from the Temple indicating the sacrifice was complete, its blood first struck on the door of each house in assurance death and judgment would pass over. The whole city would breathe a prayer of relief and thanksgiving. At the moment the shofar sounded, Jesus cried out, “It is finished!”

Let God arise! Let His enemies be scattered; Let those who hate Him flee before Him...But let the righteous be glad; Let them rejoice before God; Yes, let them rejoice exceedingly...A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows is God in His holy habitation. God sets the solitary in families; He brings out those who are bound into prosperity; You have ascended on high, You have led captivity captive; You have received gifts among men...Strengthen, O God, what You have done for us...Sing to God, you kingdoms of the earth; Oh, sing praises to the Lord, to Him who rides on the heaven of heavens! He sends out His voice, a mighty voice. O God, more awesome than Your holy places. The God of Israel is He who gives strength and power to His people. Praise the Lord! Psalm 68

“It is finished!” Jesus’ great shofar call that rocked the cosmos, split the earth, spoiled the powers of sin and darkness, and gives deliverance from death and condemnation to all who love Him.

As we celebrate our Easter/Passover season, we embrace the power of His word—Finished!

Tetelestai, the word a painter or sculptor would use when he had completed his masterpiece and presented it for approval. A word used by a builder when, having followed the design plans to completion, he hands over the keys. It was used in accounting if you purchased a piece of land or an animal or other on “credit.” When the debt was paid, the creditor would write “tetelestai,” paid in full, across the document. And the word was used by judges and jailers. When a convict had completed his sentence, the jailer would hang “tetelestai” over the open cell door meaning the prisoner had paid his debt to society and was now a free man.

You may be laboring under the burden of some unfinished business. Be it a debt, an incomplete project, recovery from illness, a daunting challenge ahead, struggling with an addiction, or a broken relationship our prayer this season is that you hear the great shofar sound of Jesus’ words from Calvary. We release the “tetelestai” of God on your behalf.

“Oh, sing praises to the Lord, to Him who rides on the heaven of heavens! He sends out His voice, a mighty voice” (Psalm 68:4).

Finished!

Happy Easter!
